Which Code Are You?

By Chris Wale

What do the following players (to name just a few) have in common: Andy Farrell, Ben
MacDougall, Brad Thorn, Ryan Cross, and Jason Robinson? They all switched to rugby union from
rugby league. The two codes of rugby are strikingly different and require different approaches and dis-ciplines. When a player chooses to play union, he gives league little-to-no thought, and vice versa.

We all must choose between options in life, but one choice in particular is universal, and it
determines the course of our entire lives. Jesus explained, “Whoever believes in the Son has eter-nal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him” (John 3:36). We must decide on the choice Jesus presents: Will we trust Him or not?

The players we’ve mentioned above “believed in the Son.” Because of this, they have changed
lives that please God, and they have a future in heaven. And so we too have the choice of living to please ourselves, or living to please God according to His direction in the Bible.

Living for ourselves and living for God are complete opposites. They won’t fit in the same life. It’s like
trying to play both rugby league and rugby union at the same time; it’s simply not feasible. We must make a choice between the two.

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” —John 3:36

良言一语三冬暖,恶语伤人六月寒。 Imagine if I were to continue writing this article in Simplified Chinese script. Even if I were to write in excellent prose and share some inspiring truths, it wouldn’t add anything to your life (unless you know Simplified Chinese). The reason is obvious. Intelligibility precedes understanding. Everyone can understand that! Paul wrote in 1 [...]

In his book On the Wing, Alan Tennant chronicles his efforts to track the migration of the peregrine falcon. Valued for their beauty, swiftness, and power, these amazing birds of prey were favorite hunting companions of emperors and nobility. Sadly, the wide use of the pesticide DDT in the 1950s interfered with their reproductive cycle [...]

Each year, one of my goals is to read the entire Bible. While listing it among my New Year’s resolutions, I noticed a bookmark on my desk. On one side was a brief appeal for people to take in foster children. On the other side were these words referring to that appeal: “Don’t read it. [...]

ODJ: wilderness experiences

God sometimes works in strange ways. Jesus is baptized, and the next thing He experiences is temptation. Led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit, He’s tempted by Satan—His adversary. Such is the nature of our own wilderness experiences. The wilderness stirred many emotions for the Jews of Jesus’ day, evoking memories of their 40-year [...]
