Walk on Water
By Eugene Seah, 23, Singapore

In life, we go through different phases—childhood, youth, and adulthood. Each phase has its sub-phases. For example, entering a new level of education, making new friends and leaving the old, stepping into the working world, breaking off a relationship, changing jobs, or entering into marriage. Which phase are you in right now? Do you feel apprehensive about transiting into a new phase in life? There is a song by Britt Nicole titled “Walk On the Water” which talks about this.
This song references the story of Peter walking on water (Matthew 14:22-32). Jesus’ disciples were caught in a storm at a lake. In the midst of it all, Jesus appeared before them, walking on water. The text states that they were terrified and confused. But Peter courageously declared, “Lord, if it’s really You, tell me to come to You, walking on the water” (v.28). Jesus invited him, and Peter stepped out of the boat into the water. However, when he saw the strong wind and waves, his courage failed him.
“You look around, staring back at you
Another wave of doubt, will it pull you under? You wonder
What if I’m overtaken? What if I never make it?
What if no one’s there? Will You hear my prayer?”
Doesn’t the lyrics echo our innermost thoughts too? But the songwriter encourages us in the next line: “When you take that first step into the unknown, You know that He won’t let you go.” As we step out in faith, we need to hold on to faith—that the One who calls us is faithful, in every situation, at all time.
So, it begs the question: do we know Jesus Christ personally? When we go to church or read our Bible, are we growing in our knowledge, love and allegiance to Jesus Christ? Or are we pursuing a religion and caught up in formalities? May we desire to want to know and experience Christ more.
Life is a journey. Let us choose to trust in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who has already promised never to forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8). We may encounter times of wavering faith like Peter but let us remember the One who has asked us to walk on water and fixed our eyes on Him.
When trials and testing come, all we need to do is cry out to Him and just as with Peter, Jesus will reach out His hand to us immediately (there may or may not be immediate alleviation to the problem, but know that God is with us through it all). All we need to do is hold on to Him.
Could the phase you are in be a walk-on-the-water experience that God has asked you into? Go for it in faith!
Finally, acknowledge Him in every step of your life and He will make your path straight (Proverbs 3:5-6). We strive, not by our own strength but by the Holy Spirit whom Jesus Christ has placed in each of us, to be a good and faithful servant as well as a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. Even if we are not certain of God’s step-by-step-plan for our lives, we can walk with Him through it all!
SEEK. LEARN. WALK.
