Do Not Bother, God!

One day, I encountered someone who looked like he was having trouble carrying a pile of books. Thinking that he could do with another pair of hands, I offered to help. But he replied: “Oh don’t bother. I can help myself”.

Wow, what an independent boy! I said to myself. Unlike those who constantly seek help from others, these self-sufficient people look impressive. Wouldn’t it be impressive too if we could tell our gracious God, “Do not bother God! I can help myself”?

Definitely not!

This “politeness” is unnecessary when it comes to our relationship with God. When someone says, “Do not bother God”, it shows his self-sufficiency. The Bible warns us against adopting such an attitude. In Habakkuk 1:11, we read: “They are deeply guilty, for their own strength is their god!”

Perhaps, on this very day, our Heavenly Father is standing at the door of our hearts. Fueled by compassion, He knocks. As we hear him knocking, we realize that there are some things in our hearts that are in chaos and we begin to panic. We think to ourselves, Oh no, He’s here, He would see all this mess and think I’m not being responsible for my life! We then busy ourselves with attempts to re-arrange our lives. We put God on hold, and we say to Him, “Yes Lord, please wait a while. I need to fix a few things first.”

Friends, do not do that!

He knocks because He wants us to invite Him in. He knows the mess behind our doors even before He enters to fix them for and with us. He wants us to involve Him in every detail, even the smallest of decisions.

Now, what? Well, you can say, “Come Lord, You see, um, I’ve messed up. Forgive me, Lord. Please come and fix them for me.”

Only at that time, will we be relying on His strength, and not leaning on ours.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek His will in all you do,
and He will show you which path to take.
Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
— Proverbs 3:5-7 —
