AOTW: An Eternal Perspective
Article of the Week – Insights from Bill Crowder

“While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)
In the film Gladiator, the hero, General Maximus Decimus Meridius wants to stir his cavalry to fight well in the coming battle against Germania. Addressing his troops, he calls them to give their very best, declaring to them, “What we do in life echoes in eternity.”
These fictional words from a fictional military leader carry a powerful concept—a concept that is of particular significance to believers. We are not just people of the day. We are not just taking up time and space on a rock floating in the universe. We are here with the opportunity to impact eternity with our lives. Jesus Himself said, “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). Having the long view, the eternal perspective, can make all the difference in the world.
This idea is particularly useful when we endure times of hardship and despair. The things of this world are temporary, as Paul said, along with the sufferings it carries. We are called to look to the eternal, and in it see the things that are not physically seen here on earth. We are challenged by the call to live life with eternity in view. And we are comforted in times of struggle by maintaining the eternal perspective.
