work on the fundamentals

Day1

reading from the playbook› Psalm 119:91-93

In the 1980s, I played professional women’s basketball for the Women’s Basketball League. Although this league is no longer in existence, to play professional women’s basketball was a dream come true for me. I showed up for the first practice session with the expectation that we would learn some new advanced skills at the professional level. To my amazement, it was quite the opposite. We spent most of the first few months of practice working on the basic fundamentals of basketball.

Now as I go from place to place teaching the skills of basketball, I have noticed that those who are grounded
in the fundamental skills of the game play the game at a higher level. When the competition gets tougher, we can rely on the fundamental skills to give us the solid foundation we need. Every skill I demonstrate in my basketball show is based on very fundamental drills.

This is also true in life. I find answers in God’s Word for problem areas in my own life. I memorize that Scripture, then when the trial comes again I can overcome life’s challenges with the Word of God, my solid foundation—my fundamentals. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” That’s as fundamental as it gets.

I host a live, call-in radio program. Recently we explored the tricky topic of hearing God’s voice. “Does God speak personally to people?” I asked listeners. “If so, how? And how can we be sure it’s His voice we’re hearing and not our own thoughts?” Maryanne was my first caller.
“Fifteen years ago I heard [...]
