But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” – Mark 1:38

This summer, the world’s greatest players will descend on South Africa to fight for the honour of World Cup Champions. It will be a display of amazing athleticism, individual skill and singleminded determination. For some players it will be the first time they’ve played on such a huge stage, and they may lose sight of the real purpose. Popularity may cloud their judgement and the desire for individual fame may get in the way of the real goal: that golden trophy.

Jesus’ time on earth drew attention like no other, and it continues to do so. His fame and popularity were tremendous, as was His power (Mark 1:34)! Whole towns would come to Him for healing or to hear Him speak (v.32). If Jesus were just a man, it would have been easy for Him to lose sight of His real mission: going to the cross so that we might be forgiven by God.

But Jesus never lost sight of that goal. He knew that His job was the most important the world has ever known. And He knew the centrality of preaching His message (v.38).

It is only through hearing, understanding and accepting the Word of God, the gospel, that we can have our sins forgiven. Jesus did everything necessary for you to hear that message. Have you responded? —Jon Lindsay

Jesus’ goal was always to go to the cross for our sins.

February 19, 1942, was a fascinating day for Canada. It was “If Day”—a World War II staging of a fake Nazi invasion of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The intent was to show what it would be like “if” Canada fell under the harsh occupation of Nazi forces, and so that Canadians would support the war effort more [...]

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the US on September 11, 2001. It’s hard to think about that date without mental images of the destruction, grief, and loss that swept over America and the world following those tragic events. The loss of thousands of lives was compounded by the depth of [...]
