Don’t you realise that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God. – 1 Corinthians 6:9

David Beckham’s first World Cup finals in 1998 against Argentina ended in disappointment after he was shown a red card by Danish referee Kim Neilsen. Without him, England lost on penalties. Beckham was blamed by many fans and the press for the defeat.

In March 1999, Diego Simeone admitted faking injury to get Beckham sent off. Simeone said, “Let’s just say the referee fell into the trap. Obviously I was being clever. By letting myself fall, I got the referee to pull out a red card immediately. In reality, it wasn’t a violent blow; it was just a little kickback with no force behind it, and it was probably instinctive.”

Sadly, players often pretend to be fouled and fake injury. They know the rules but break them if it’s to their advantage. They don’t care about the impact on others. The Bible explains to us God’s rules, our need to obey these rules, and how to live our lives His way. It is our nature to want to cheat to our advantage and do things our way. The Bible calls this sin and tells us that such behaviour isn’t acceptable to God. If we aren’t willing to accept His authority and change, then we can never be close to God. He leaves the choice to us. —Kevin Gregory

There is a path before each person that seems right,
but it ends in death. —Proverbs 16:25
