The Final Goal: Mistaken Identity

Read: John 10:20-30
In the 2002 World Cup, superstar striker Ronaldo changed his hairstyle after his Brazilian side defeated England. He did so because his infant son confused him with teammate Roberto Carlos—a rather unfortunate case of mistaken identity.
Jesus also suffered from mistaken identity. On earth He taught the Word and ways of God with authority. He
healed the sick, raised the dead and did many miracles before the people.
But when He claimed to be one with God and said that He had been sent to die for the world and lead them in new life, many rejected Him. They accused, “He’s demon-possessed and out of His mind. Why listen to a man like that?” (John 10:20).
There seems to be some logic in saying this. Jesus’ claim is huge! It requires us to submit our whole lives to Him. But some of His listeners said, “Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” (v.21).
It was vital for Ronaldo to make his identity clear to his son; it is far more crucial that Jesus made Himself
clear to us.
God proved Jesus’ words true beyond doubt when He raised Him from the dead, just as Jesus promised. We must carefully consider Jesus’ identity and words to know whether we want to trust Him with our lives. —Chris Wale

ODJ: the choice is yours
A missionary friend who has lived in Uganda for nearly 20 years recently told me that his wife doesn’t enjoy their family’s annual trip to the United States. The reason? “There are too many choices there!” she says. It’s true that—with fewer consumer products at our disposal—life in Uganda can seem less complicated than in [...]
ODJ: particular people
I like to walk around my neighborhood and take in the sights. As I wander along, my eyes view the textures, the details, particular names, and particular places. My street’s texture includes the Williams’ home (neighborhood patriarchs who sip cold orange sodas on their porch), the young couple who walk to the market (always holding [...]

One of the highlights of my work as a college president is commencement. One year, while walking to the graduation ceremony, I was excited by the thought that our graduates were ready to go out to engage the world with the transforming power of the kingdom of Christ. On my way, I noticed some industrious [...]
