The Final Goal: Love And Vengeance

I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. – Luke 6:27

When I played in goal at university, I had a teammate who had been the keeper on his national team in Ghana. Though he was an exceptional keeper, he was also our best player, so he became our striker. To prepare me for playing in goal, he began teaching me the West African style of goalkeeping— stay close to the goal-line, don’t wander out into the area, be conservative. He explained to me that this was a very different approach than that of European goalkeeping, which was daring and flamboyant. Surprisingly, even something as simple as protecting the goal offers very different approaches for success.

In fact, in many important areas of life there are different approaches—and Jesus wants us to wisely choose our approach. Nowhere is that more true than in how we respond to those who hurt us. The world demands vengeance and wants payback, but Jesus offers a different approach. A better way. He said, “But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you” (Luke 6:27). It is the path to a clear conscience and a pure heart in a world full of pain and bitterness. It is not just a different
approach—it is the only way to deal with our broken heart’s desire for vengeance. —Bill Crowder

God created us as diverse and unique individuals,
but there is only one way to come to Him.
