May i ask. what does the “Five loaves of bread and two fishes?” means / refers to generally? For example: does it mean the sacrifices a person make? Or does it mean the blessings a person received? Or what?
p/s: *would like to have tom felten reply if possible.*

    thanks.

natasha, good question! Jesus’ miracle of feeding the “five thousand” is found in all four Gospels. As it says in John 6:9, “A boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish” was found in a crowd of hungry people that Jesus had been teaching in the wilderness. Jesus took his meager amount of food and fed a multitude! This provision reflects how God provided for the Israelites when they needed food in the wilderness after they had left Egypt. In that account, God provided a mysterious food called manna (Numbers 11:6-9). This miracle also points to the fact that Jesus is “the bread of life” (John 6:35) who alone can meet our spiritual hunger. Many people, as detailed in the song and art associated with this post, see the boy’s offering of his little lunch as a metaphor for our need to surrender all we have to God. He can do great things in us and through us as we give Him our all!

I luv this song… my five loaves and two fishes is my life…its just a token gift but when handed over to my maker, can be used to do great exploits for God…

  5. Jamila says:

i think it’s all about having faith and trust, when giving it all up to GOD.

  6. simone says:

five loaves and two fishes to is the surrender of what you have (the physical ) to show God you are willing to trust Him beyond what you see, hear or feel. Other wise known as faith. it is like letting go of small thing in order to receive the bigger thing. For example you are in a relationship and have become sexually involved. That’s not God’s initial plan for your life therefore the solution maybe to let go of that which you are holding on to so that you can receive or make room for what God will be pleased with and most likely be the person whom God had predestined for you.

  14. ayobami says:

five loaves and two fishes talks more about we coming to jesus, He said come unto me all ye that labour and are heavily laden, i will give you rest. this is calling us into a place of rest in Christ which he desires for every one that follows Him. that is life not more than the abundance of your possession. paul says, the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace and joy in the holy ghost. tha was why later in the book of John, jesus adviced the multitude who came after Him later, that they didn’t come because of the signs but rather because they were fed. jesus told them that they should not labour for food which is perishable but that which His imperishable- eternal life.

  16. Mercy says:

I think it means that we should surrender everything to God, to be prepared to give up our all, even if it means that we will be left with nothing. I think it also means that we should learn from that little boy who gave up his five loaves and two fishes to Jesus to share with the crowd, to put our faith in Him, to trust that He is able to provide. To cast our everything to Him, and to trust that He will do all things well. (:
    God bless~

  17. Jerusha says:

This sure must mean something!! It’s the 3rd time this week this verse is popping up at me! I believe God wants me to give whatever little I have to Him. It may be a skill I have that man may think it’s not good enough and I’m to shy to use it. The boy had seem so insignificant in that great multitude. His food was such a meager amount. There was no way he would have been able to feed so many people. In the same way, in my thinking, there is no way I can ever bless a crowd with my skills. But God reminded me of this little boy. Did he give his food to the multitude? No, he gave them to Jesus. The food now belongs to Jesus. And Jesus use that simple offering to bless the thousands. And who receive the glory and the exaltation? Did the boy receive any? No, not one. In the same way, God is teaching me that though I may think that this skill I have is not good enough, yet He is asking me to give it to Him. Not to the crowd, but to Jesus. He is able to do the impossible. And at the end of the day, He’ll get the glory. That’s my desire. For Jesus must increase and I must decrease. Whatever I do, whatever I say, let not me receive the glory, but may the name of Jesus be praised!

  18. Gail says:

All that we have. our happiness our grievings, our skills or the worships we sing to Him. Through all that, Jesus changes us into something beautiful. He blesses and enable us to accomplish greater things Him. I think?

  19. alex says:

I agree with Tom Felten that the purpose of the miracles was to point us to Jesus, who is the bread of life. Jesus literally use the wilderness experience in the Old Testament to draw parallel comparison in His teaching. It is not hard to see if we read the whole of chapter 6. it was the tipping point of Jesus’ ministry as well. People choose to stop following Him or become His disciples. There is a tough lesson behind this. It is about making the decision in following Christ after knowing who He is and His demands. I don’t think it was about our giftings or how we use it. At least not in this John 6.

Paul said in Romans 5:20, “Where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.” But that radical concept opens a theological floodgate.
