Someone said, “Where expectations are high, we tend to rise to meet them. Where expectations are low, we tend to drop and meet them.”

Can you think of any relevant examples?

if u expect your exam mark to be 100, u’ll study hard to meet it. by the time u get 95, u’ll study even harder. however, if it just 50, you can simply study half hearted to reach the low target.

    Students.
When the teacher give u 2 home works to be done in 1 day we tend to finish it on time, But.
when we get 1 home work to be finish in example 1 month maybe to do community service project we tend to forget about it… :D

    • David Jeong says:

Yea, that’s true, we always tend to do things when there’s more and is highly expected.

  3. Abby says:

When I am at my youth group, I see older kids dropping their maturity a little to reach the goofy level of younger children. They will mess around, talk about something completely non-sensible, or text way too much. But when that same kid is around an adult, they are calm, collected, and talk as if they know exactly what they are talking about. They drop low to meet the expectations of younger children, then rise to meet the high expectations of adults.

  4. Darren says:

    I agree with you lin,
When you only require 50 to pass an exam, and nobody really expects anything more, in fact the average person around you is only scoring roughly 50 – you work less than your full potential, and drop your own standards. I find myself doing this on occasion.

  5. Reuben says:

I agree to all of you…

When it comes to studies… ” Aim for the stars, you’ll reach the moon “, the higher you aim, the closer ( not closest ), you are to your aim.. Thats the way i see it, People work for an 80 they get in 70s, aim for 100 you get 90s.. but there isn’t any problem in aiming higher and setting lofty expectations as long as you believe that they are feasible and in line with God’s will…

  6. Matthew chiow chong how says:

For me other then being just in a student’s world let step into our christianity life. when there is a mission trip coming up then we realised there a need to spread the gospel to the people around us but when we com back from the mission trip, our life go back as square one… because we only do that know that its just for that trip…
Of course its bad , so let’s continue to spread the gospel even though its not an expectation=)

  7. natasha says:

Well, Expectations are indeed adjustable and suited to the worldly needs.
Expecations I would say depends on one’s eagerness and willingness to perform.
Sometimes, the question mark is do I do this and this just to please who and who…..
By meeting the expectations, would I turn out to be a fake? *(this would refer more to a relationship context / human relations context)*

As for examination, it’s a norm. Quesitons like what are your studies expectations and Voila! you get a gazziliion of answers that revovles scoring a full string of As..

Despite all this, remember that the onyl expectation we should not alter, adjust or neglect is the expectation from GOD to us. He wants us to live as His children, being good testimonies to others, expecting us to PRAY and tlak to HIM everyday. Share the Gospel.Do everything with accordance to His Word and Will and greates of all to live a Christ-like life.

That’s the expectation, we as Christians should and must hold on to.

  8. Faith-Lois says:

Lets look at this picture: Proud dad travels to see his long time friends&brags about his cute,prim&proper,brilliant,soon-to-be-lawyer.
They(dads friends),send an invitation to the ‘perfect angel’ to spend the long-hols with them.
At first;Wow! I’ll be going East!
Secondly: worry, anxiety, would I be what they think I am?
Then: I’ve got to be my best. I fling my stuff around-wouldnt do that. Could be a parrot-I’ll caution that… I must have a ready answer to any legal question I’m asked, afterall, I’m a lawyer in the making and blah! Thats how it is for many of us. Isn’t it?
However, its different when we don’t care what the people think.

    • Kwesi A says:

TOTAL EXAMPLE OF MY LIFE Miss Boston( my geography teacher she favours me) gives me a report to do i finish it the day i got it now my soical studies supervisor (yes supervisor all she does is sit and watch us find information and answers to quesions in some textbook)gives me a group assignment for tomorrow i still have NO idea what its about!

  9. Faith-Lois says:

I was expecting some money at the bank and so i trekked along distance to the bank because of the expectation i had,if any other person had told me to come without any reason i would have refused because i was not expecting anything from the person,so high expectations could make you do extraordinary things.

  10. Moalong says:

Yeah, its true we people have become so greedy that we neglect those little things and hover over the bigger share which we think would benefit us more. We should Just remember tat a mighty land rover wouldn’t move an inch if those tiny spark plugs were missing.

  11. Samuel says:

Well I must say its true that when the pass mark is 50%, we tend to utilise what I call the “atleast syndrome” by saying “as long as I get atleast 50%, I will be happy”. This in-turn reduces our study efforts and the determination to make it to the best. So we need to make sure that one of our values is to aim high in what we do, especially in the things that concern the Spirit.

  12. Melissa says:

Yes! If we put our expectation high, we tend to reach it. But it depends on some people, they put their expectation high but wouldn’t want to work hard. And for the low expatations, people have no confident in themselves, so they will not want to work hard.( I’m just giving my opinion)

  13. Malika says:

Its bad when others have low expectations for you but its worse when you have low expectations for yourself. If all your teacher expects from you is 50% of course the pressure is less, but the question is what do you expect from yourself?

  14. angelina says:

regardless the expectation, one shall do the best all the time..

  15. Abraham says:

It’s true but setting high goals without putting it to deed is futile.

  16. Martin says:

You get out of life what you put into it
