The Majesty of Completion
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!”
And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit (John 19:30).
“It is finished!” In the Greek, it is “te telestai”; “It is completed”; “I have done it!” Matthew 27:50 says that Jesus’ last words were cried with a loud voice—it’s a victory shout! Spurgeon wrote: “It would need all the other words that were ever spoken to explain this one word. It is altogether immeasurable. It is high, I cannot attain to it. It is deep, I cannot fathom it!”
Jesus’ commitment to the Father’s plan was evident throughout His ministry, and He carried that commitment to the end—”obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:8). He said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:34). “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4).
He had done it all! He had left no prophecy unfulfilled, no work unfinished, no love unshared, no suffering unaccomplished. He had completed all the Father had sent Him to do. Then He rested. But it was not the rest of weariness that Jesus experienced. It was the rest of fulfillment. He had completed salvation—no more sacrifices were ever to be needed. No more ritual would ever need to be performed. No human effort would ever be required. As the gift of eternal grace, Jesus had completed salvation, once for all—for all of us.

What an example of the way to respond to insult and injury! While there is a place for self-defense, personal [...]
ODB: Stuck In The Mire
Jeremiah has been called “the weeping prophet.” He may have had a sensitive and melancholic disposition that was compounded by his heartbreak over God’s judgment on disobedient Israel. His capacity for sorrow is amazing: “Oh, that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night!” (Jer. [...]
ODB: When Someone Falls
It has become so commonplace to hear of the misconduct of a respected public figure that even though we may be deeply disappointed, we are hardly surprised. But how should we respond to the news of a moral failure, whether by a prominent person or a friend? We might begin by looking at ourselves. A [...]
ODB: Sonrise!
My state’s name, “Idaho,” according to one legend, comes from a Shoshone Indian word, “ee-dah-how.” When translated into English, it means something like, “Behold! The sun rising over the mountain.” I often think of that when the sun breaks over the eastern peaks and spills light and life into our valley. Also, I think of Malachi’s [...]
