The Supernatural Peace Jesus Walked In

By Alvin Mak, 21, Singapore

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” —John 14:27

Jesus walked in an unearthly peace. No one was busier than Jesus, but no one possesses a greater peace than Jesus. He was never in a hurry. He always had time. He took time to minister to the crowd as well as the individual who needed Him. He looked at storms and demons in the eye, commanded them to leave, and they submitted to Him. He even seemed late (on more than one occasion!), but even that could not stop Him from performing a miracle.

This is the peace He left with us. This peace He walked in throughout His ministry, He bequeathed to us. This is not a peace the world can offer.

The world also offers peace, but one that you can achieve by escaping reality—be it through music, aromatherapy, meditation, or massage chairs. But guess what? They are all temporary. The moment the music stops, the pleasant scents are gone, and so goes your peace as well as the money you spent on them! (Please don’t get me wrong, I am not against these things; they have their purposes.) But depending on these things will not give you the peace that Jesus possesses—the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Jesus walked in a rugged, hardy peace that was independent of circumstance. Aromatherapy? Definitely not on the boat where He stood and preached (unless fishy odours are your preference!) Calm, soothing music? Hardly. In the midst of the furious squall that broke out in the Sea of Galilee, He was asleep.

Jesus’ peace was supernatural.

Would you like to walk in that same peace, which is independent of your situation? Maybe you are in a tempest of epic proportions. Maybe you’re facing an insane schedule, jam-packed with impossible deadlines. Or maybe someone in your family is (or yourself are) desperately ill, and your mind knows nothing but worry.

If you answered yes, you want a peace that abides deep in you, you want that peace which is far above any power, where there is an imperturbability (a big word which means incapable of being agitated) about you, Jesus only wants you to do one thing.

“Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

“But that’s too simple!” you may think. “How will not letting my heart be troubled or afraid help me get rid of these problems?”

You’re missing the point. Jesus never said He would remove your troubles. He Himself was always in situations where there was trouble. He did not walk in peace apart from storms. He walked in peace in the storms, and in spite of storms.

Do you want that peace? If you do, just do that one thing. Every time your heart is troubled or afraid, put your hand on your heart and speak the words of Jesus to yourself. “Let not (my) heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” And let His supernatural peace (not yours!) rule in your heart, and guide you through whatever situation you are facing.
