ODB: quiet time with God

January 28, 2010

Time spent with God is time well spent.

READ: Psalm 23

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. —Psalm 23:2

The word connected captures our contemporary experience of life. Many people rarely go anywhere without a cell phone, iPod, laptop, or pager. We have become accessible 24 hours a day. Some psychologists see this craving to stay connected as an addiction. Yet a growing number of people are deliberately limiting their use of technology. Being a “tech-no” is their way of preserving times of quiet, while limiting the flow of information into their lives.

Many followers of Christ find that a daily time of Bible reading and prayer is essential in their walk of faith. This “quiet time” is a disconnection from external distractions in order to connect with God. The “green pastures” and “still waters” of Psalm 23:2 are more than an idyllic country scene. They speak of our communion with God whereby He restores our souls and leads us in His paths (v.3).

All of us can make time to meet with God, but do we? In Robert Foster’s booklet “7 Minutes With God,” he suggests a way to begin: Start with a brief prayer for guidance, then read the Bible for a few minutes, and close with a short time of prayer that includes adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication for others. It’s vital to take time today to connect with the Lord, who is our life.  — David C. McCasland

  1. yeah, I admit that even though I’m a christian for quite so many years. I still find it hard to connect with God through a short prayer ot\r bible reading. Thats because I’m being so pre occupied of things of this world such us texting, chatting and internet. How I wish I can be able to resist them and focus on what is much important.

Jenny, you can try to get connected with God via many ways i.e through worship, sing praise to God, praise His wonderful name..if I find myself hard to connect with God, I just talked to God, the real condition of my heart, just talk to Him like a friend and the best thing I’ve ever experienced was I just placed my Bible openly on my lap and cried out to God guest what God speaks to me! try to read the book of psalms…connecting with God is such a wonderful moment I’ve ever had..

  3. Neris says:

Geraldine, I agree with you… it is hard to connect with God, and sometimes confusing, because we don’t know how to connect with Him. I simply just do the same like you, Geraldine, when I feel disconnected with God, I come in a simple pray and tell Him about my condition, or sometimes just my daily condition. it amazed me, how our wonderful God really care about us, even in the simplest thing in our daily life. praising and worship our Heavenly Father’s name is indeed a simple thing that can help us to reconnect with Him..
    God bless you all….

That’s right. Time spent with God is definitely time well spent. Just be in awe of His wisdom that can be upon you when you read His word with faith.
No matter how hectic one’s schedule in life may be, one should always seek God first. (Matthew 6 : 33)
As a student, I may face the stress of schoolwork and examinations. But never do I compromise time with God for what is only temporary. For God’s wisdom and truth is everlasting :)

  5. Priyanka James says:

yeah it’s absolutely true,we have to spent quality time with God.He is our Heavenly Father,He wants to see us always as our earthly parents want us to be close with them.He should be our first priority before everything.
so lets take out time for our Father and pour out our heart to Him.

  6. marcie says:

I know of a sister-in-Christ who testified that she feels uncomfortable and ‘hungry’ should she miss a day of quiet time feeding on the Word of God. This is really how the soul needs to be nourished with the ‘daily bread’!

  7. Arnold says:

It’s amazing to know God….have faith all the time.

  8. Faith says:

@ Marcie, I guess I’m a lot like that sister-in-Christ. Should I miss a morning of quiet time with God, I feel restless throughout the day; I feel uncomfortable and empty. I now know that if I want the day to go smoothly, I have to spend sometime alone with God. And right now, what I am trying to cultivate is not just one quiet moment in the morning, but trying to stay connected to God all thru d day. It’s really worth it, if I can just disregard all the noise and distractions.
