The King Who Delivers: Deliberate Praise For Help Given

While many people can talk about the first time that they ran 15km with much thrill and accomplishment, my first was quite far from being an enjoyable episode.

It happened when I accompanied a group of runners who was training for a 15km running competition. We were driven to a very ulu (deserted) part of eastern Singapore for an evening training run. Knowing that I would be outrun by the pro runners quite early in the run, I told my friend who was driving the van to wait for me at the halfway point and I would stop my run there. Well, that was the plan. About twenty minutes into the run, I started to wonder if I was running in the right direction. Another twenty minutes later, I could not seem to find the van. The next twenty minutes, I decided that I was lost.

But I kept running. With no money, handphone, watch or even a bottle of water – continuing to run seemed to be the only thing I was capable of doing. Running aimlessly, feelings of fear and unease soon started to rise in me. It started to get darker as night fell. As I was running along a path that had no street lights, the darkness was quite overwhelming. There came a point when I had to slow down and stop for fear that I would crash into something – I could not even see my hands in front of me! Feelings of distress started to stir in me as I cried out to God. I was unsure of whether I should slow down or speed up. I was uncertain about where I should be running towards. I was confused over what I could do – I was literally helpless. Thank God He heard my prayers! A search-and-rescue team was formed quickly after I was lost and when the runners eventually found me, I hugged them in gratitude and with great relief.

With an even greater sense of gratitude and thanksgiving, I thank God for sending His Son to search-and-rescue me who was lost in my sin. Our God is a God who does hear and rescue His people for He is righteous. Let us proclaim His righteousness for future generations to come, and truly praise Him!
