Interview: Anne Cetas

1. What is a day in your shoes like?
My size 9 shoes are under my desk most days, while I’m editing, proofing, writing, or evaluating devotional articles.

2. What does your job require you to do?
Evaluate new material according to established guidelines, interact with fellow editors, research and write devotionals, read whenever I can, e-mail authors about improvements to make in their writing, search the Scriptures and story sources, cultivate new writers, maintain relationships with writers, write to an occasional disgruntled reader, lead meetings with editors, scrutinize and refine editorial processes and article guidelines, manage schedules and deadlines, plan special projects, drink diet Coke, and eat chocolate.

3. What are the necessary skills that the job requires?
Critical thinking and analysis, editing, diplomacy, Bible knowledge, decision-making, good grammar and writing, thick skin, good communication of ideas.

4. What does it mean for you to honour God in your work?
I seek to honour God by calling on Him for His wisdom, direction, and help throughout the day, thanking Him for what He does, thinking about His Word and His promises, trusting His faithfulness.

5. What is one verse that has carried you through all your time in this profession? And why?
I’m not one to pick out ONE verse for all time. But, today, my desire for my writing and editing is: “We proclaim Christ, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labour, struggling with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me” (from Colossians 1). That’s what our publication is seeking to do, so it’s my personal aim as well.

6. What kind of attitude(s) must one have to work in this industry?
Patience with others, willingness to change your work, humility, flexibility.

7. What are your top 5 tips for aspiring writers? E.g. Must-have
a. Read everything you find,
b. Edit your own work,
c. Be accurate and give credit to your source,
d. Network with other writers and editors,
e. Persevere.

8. How did your love of writing come about?
I’ve been an editor of devotional material for many years. When someone asked me twice if I would consider writing, I prayed about it, and tried. I found that I could do it well. Yet I would not say I LOVE writing. There are times when an article writes itself (I love that!), and other times when I have to labour over it to get it into shape—write, and rewrite.

9. What was your first job in this industry when you started? How has it helped shaped your feelings toward the industry?
I became an editor for Our Daily Bread in 1985.

10. If you could meet any Bible character, who would it be? And why?
I’d like to meet David, because he was called a man after God’s own heart, and he poured out his thoughts before God honestly.

To Ann Cetas, I just read Nov. 22 reading of Our Daily Bread. I thank you. It is just what I needed to hear today. Blessings, Bonita

    Anne,

I read today (May 18, 2012) from “Our Daily Bread” about you desiring to be a mother and I was sadden that God did not give you your request. I am sure that you would of made a great mother. I also reviewed my life and it did not go as I had planned either (I am now 58 years old). God has other plans that one day we will understand. God has used your gift of writing to glorify Him and I appreciate all that you do. May God continue to bless you and your ministry.

    God bless,

    Ed
